who is hikari hanazono?

Hikari Hanazono is the female heroine of the shoujo series Special A. The story follows the tale of an extremely determined girl whose sole purpose in life has become about beating a boy named Kei Takishima in, well, just about anything. Kei was the first person to ever hand her a solid defeat and Hikari couldn't forget about it. That humiliation boiled into an obsession and the entire series is the story of how that plays out.

why i love her

Hikari was a slap in the face for me. After having read through more than my fair share of shoujo series, I came into Special A with the same sort of drawled mindframe that everyone does. Always expecting to be setup with cliche after cliche and maybe one series will have that one little quirk in it to make it bearable.

I don't think I got five pages into the story before I became completely infested in this series and that was all thanks to Hikari. She was finally an original heroine! At long last! She wasn't a bubbling damsel: she captured a burglar when she was little!! She didn't sob about not being good enough: she raged and obsessed over improving every time she didn't get good enough. She is the most extreme form of dedication I have ever seen in a female character and I was completely blown away! She is easily one of my favorite female characters of all time and I greatly admire everything from her skill to her thick skull. Being so one track minded, she's always good for a laugh (or fifty) and I've found myself more then once rooting for her whenever she tries to set someone straight or state a comeback to being called Number 2 again.

Headstrong and quick to bounce back, Hikari is admirable in all her imperfections and despite what people in her school may see her as (being in Special A, after all), we get to see quite clearly that Hikari has a lot of things she still needs to figure out and I enjoyed every step of watching her grow and flesh out as a person but still manage to stay that same, over energetic challenging high school girl who blew my cliche-soaked mind completely out of the water.
