Puck is introduced as a football player and bully at William McKinley High School. He is the best friend of quarterback Finn Hudson, and is involved in a casual relationship with cheerleader Santana Lopez until she breaks up with him for having a low credit score. Puck starts out on the show as a rather unlikeable character who seemed homophobic and mocks Finn for joining the school glee club, New Directions, but later becomes a part of glee club director Will Schuester's all-male acapella group, the Acafellas, hoping to impress the mothers at the school's PTA meeting. (He is attracted to older women.) When Finn's girlfriend Quinn Fabray becomes pregnant and tells Finn the baby is his, Puck realizes that he is the true father, and offers to support Quinn. She turns him down, calling him a "Lima loser". Puck begins dating glee club star Rachel Berry after his mother urges him to find a Jewish girlfriend. Puck sings "Sweet Caroline" for Rachel in front of the glee club to prove that he can be her "leading man". Their relationship is short-lived, and Rachel breaks up with him because she still has feelings for Finn and he still has feelings for Quinn.Puck tries to prove that he would be a good father by offering Quinn money that he steals from the glee club bake sale (while, to be fair, the bakesale was a success only because Puck provided a secret ingredient). Quinn refuses the money, but thanks him and apologizes for calling him a "Lima loser". Quinn begins to reconsider having the baby adopted and gives Puck a chance to prove himself by helping her to babysit Terri's three nephews. Puck impresses her, but Quinn later learns that he spent the session sexting Santana. Puck states that he would be a good father, but he cannot remain in a committed relationship with Quinn if she refuses to have sex with him. Quinn returns to her original plan of giving the baby to Terri. Rachel begins to suspect that Puck is the father of Quinn's baby and tells Finn. When Finn confronts her, Quinn admits the truth, and Finn attacks Puck. Puck again offers to be with Quinn, but she turns him down and tells him she wants to be alone. In the episode "Laryngitis", when Puck's mohawk is shaved off by his doctor, he finds the other McKinley students no longer respect him as a badass. He briefly dates fellow glee club member Mercedes Jones, then a popular cheerleader, to restore his status, but the two don't have much in common and soon break up when Puck returns to his bullying ways.
In the first season finale, "Journey", Quinn goes into labor immediately after the club performs at Regionals. Puck and Mercedes witness Quinn give birth to a baby girl. Later on, Puck and Quinn visit their baby, and Puck tells Quinn that he loves her. Beth is adopted by Rachel's mother, the coach of Vocal Adrenaline (a rival glee club). In "Duets" Puck has been sent to a juvenile detention center for driving his mother's car through a convenience store window and trying to make away with the ATM. He returns in "Never Been Kissed", but he is now on probation and helps Artie out in an attempt to satisfy his community service. While initially having acted tough, Puck eventually confesses to Artie that he was terrified in juvie, and the two come to the agreement that Artie will tutor Puck as he picks up trash to fulfill his community service requirements. In "Special Education", Puck is asked by Will to find a new glee club member to replace Kurt.
While asking the football team, he is assaulted and put into a port-a-potty, but is rescued by Lauren Zizes, who becomes the club's new twelfth member. Later in the episode, Puck makes out with Rachel, but leaves before it can go too far, as he doesn't want to betray Finn for a second time. In the episode "Silly Love Songs", Puck unexpectedly falls for Lauren Zizes (much to Santana's dismay), who is not his usual choice in terms of looks. Puck performs the song "Fat Bottomed Girls" by Queen, which expresses his love of Lauren's bigger body type. However, Lauren is offended by the song. She later accepts Puck's offer to go on a date with him to BreadstiX, but she stands him up. Puck ends up making out with a waitress, Michelle, when Lauren doesn't show up. Puck says he likes Lauren, not because of her looks but because of her "badass-ness"; Lauren says she is not looking for something casual. In the end, Lauren and Puck appear to be just friends, even though Puck wants more than that. In the episode "Sexy", Puck and Lauren plan to make a sex tape, until Holly informs them that it would be considered child pornography. A shocked Puck joins the celibacy club as a result. Also Puck performs the song "Afternoon Delight" with Rachel, Quinn, Emma, and Carl. In "Original Song", Puck writes and sings a song for Lauren—"Big Ass Heart"—that she likes.
